What is Janu Basti?
Janu Basti is an Ayurvedic musculoskeletal therapy designed specifically to treat acute and degenerative disorders of the knee joints. The Sanskrit word Janu refers to the knee joint (Janu Sandhi), and Basti refers to retaining or pooling medicated liquid. In this specialized external therapy, a reservoir crafted from freshly kneaded black gram flour (Masha Pishti) is sealed around the knee joint. Warm, medicated herbal oils are then continuously poured and retained inside this reservoir at an optimal therapeutic temperature for a specified duration.
According to classical Ayurveda, the knee joint is governed by Shleshaka Kapha (the biological humor responsible for synovial fluid lubrication and shock absorption) and Vyana Vata (the force that governs mobility). When Vata increases due to aging, wear and tear, or injury, it dries up Shleshaka Kapha, leading to friction, cartilage wear (Sandhigata Vata), stiffness, and severe pain upon weight-bearing. At Dr. Bhoir’s Kalpataru Ayurved in Kopargaon, Janu Basti replenishes essential joint lubrication, regenerates periarticular tissues, and revitalizes weight-bearing mobility without painful surgeries or steroids.
Benefits of Janu Basti Treatment
Janu Basti provides targeted biological rejuvenation and mechanical relief directly to the knee joint:
- Restoration of Synovial Lubrication: Enhances the production and quality of Shleshaka Kapha (synovial fluid), reducing painful bone-on-bone friction.
- Cartilage and Tissue Protection: Delivers herbal nutrients directly into the joint capsule, slowing degenerative wear and tear.
- Rapid Relief from Joint Pain and Stiffness: The sustained warmth and anti-inflammatory herbs dissolve severe morning stiffness and throbbing knee ache.
- Strengthening of Ligaments & Tendons: Deeply nourishes the cruciate ligaments, collateral ligaments, and patellar tendon for joint stability.
- Increased Walking Range and Flexibility: Re-establishes smooth knee flexion and extension, allowing pain-free walking, climbing stairs, and sitting.
- Safe, Non-Invasive Therapy: Provides a natural, side-effect-free alternative to corticosteroid injections and knee replacement surgeries.
What to Expect During Your Session
When you arrive at Kalpataru Ayurved in Kopargaon, Dr. Bhoir will first examine your knee joints, assessing range of motion, crepitus (joint clicking), localized swelling, and tenderness to select the appropriate herbal formulation.
You will lie comfortably on your back on our classical treatment table with your knees supported in a relaxed position. The therapist begins with a gentle, soothing massage around the knee using warm medicated oil. A circular dough ring is then constructed and firmly attached to the knee joint, enclosing the patella and surrounding joint capsule. Warm medicinal oil—such as Ksheerabala Tailam, Murivenna, Dhanwantharam Tailam, or Mahanarayana Tailam—is gently poured into the ring. The oil is continually refreshed with warm herbal oil to maintain an even temperature for 30 to 40 minutes. Following the oil retention, the ring is removed, and localized herbal steam (Nadi Swedana) or herbal poultice (Patra Pinda Sweda) is applied to lock in the therapeutic effect.
Conditions Treated
Janu Basti is highly effective for addressing a broad range of degenerative, traumatic, and inflammatory knee conditions:
